Money Matters
When do I pay? £100 deposit per person is required to confirm your places on holidays or courses of over 4 days (£50 for holidays less than 4 days). The balance is required no later than 6 weeks before the commencement date for holidays outside the UK, or 30 days for UK trips. No places can be confirmed before the deposit has been paid.
How do I pay? Once you have contacted us to reserve your places, you will be given information on how and when to pay. This is either by cheque, or by bank transfer.
What if I need to cancel? If you cancel more than 6 weeks before the commencement of the holiday (or 30 days for UK holidays), you lose your deposit. Closer to the time than that, there are various charges - see the Terms and Conditions below.
What if EMT cancels? EMT will only cancel if less than three people book onto a holiday - you will get a full refund, or credit for that amount. In the event of force majeure (unforeseeable event such as natural or man-made disaster or other event), you should be covered by your insurance. We recommend you take out insurance when you book your holiday.
What is included in the price? Specific details are given on the information sheet for each holiday, with more detailed information provided when you book a holiday. Generally for European treks, accommodation, most meals and necessary travel during the holiday are all included. For UK holidays, travel will be by shared private vehicles.
What is NOT included in the price? This depends upon the holiday. Generally, neither travel to the start nor from the end of the holiday is included, nor is insurance, some or all evening meals, incidental expenses, and drinks and snacks.
What insurance do I need? The insurance should be for travel and activity - mountain rescue in Europe is expensive, and must be paid by the person who is being rescued, or their insurance.
Is my money safe? When you pay your deposit and balance, all moneys are held in a trust account until the holiday has been completed. This ensures that the money is available for you to complete your holiday. We only take the money once the holiday has finished.
Equipment
What equipment do I need? This will depend upon which holiday you are going on. You will be sent a kit list when you book your holiday, but don't delay in buying boots - the more they are worn in, the more comfortable you will be on your holiday.
Where can I buy equipment? If you don’t know where to go, contact us, and we can recommend somewhere
Can I hire any equipment? EMT have walking poles for hire at £10 per pair per week. These must be booked in advance. We can also arrange equipment hire for winter skills courses - helmets, axes and crampons.
People and Information
What information does EMT need about us? We need to know if you have any dietary requirements, or any medical conditions. To ensure you are on the right grade of holiday, we speaks to every person going on the holiday to assess if you have the relevant fitness and/or experience - we don't want you to find your holiday an ordeal, or cause yourself or the rest of the group problems.
What information do I receive about the holiday? Once we have received your deposit, you will be sent a kit list, insurance requirements and payment information. Nearer the start of the holiday, you will be sent a full day-by-day itinerary.
Who will my guide be? Ben leads nearly all the holidays, and you will be sent an information sheet on your guide when you receive the full day-to-day itinerary two or three weeks before the holiday starts.
Who else will be on the holiday with me? We limit groups size to eight, plus the guide, so not too big. Contact us, and we can tell you what sort of people are on the holiday
Are under 18s allowed? Unless otherwise stated, under 18s are allowed on our holidays, but they must be accompanied by a parent at all times while undertaking the activity. If any under 18s are included, we may ask for more details about them to ensure the holiday is suitable for them. Each person is taken as a separate case. If you are in doubt as to a holiday's suitability for a child, then please contact us
Can I bring my dog? The only holidays which would be appropriate for dogs would be walking holidays in the UK, or on certain rock climbing trips. A dog may accompany you if everybody on the holiday has no objection, that the dog is capable of the walk, and that owners keep it under control (which may mean on a lead) whenever necessary. It would not be possible for dogs to accompany their owners onto the hill on winter holidays, holidays abroad, or scrambling holidays. If in doubt, ask!
The Holiday
How do I know what level of holiday is right for me? There can be no hard and fast rule about what experience or fitness you need for any holiday - it can only be a guideline. However, if you are not used to carrying a rucksack at all, it is unlikely you'd want to go on a trip which requires carrying heavy bags. If you are unsure about what holiday would suit you, do not hesitate in contacting us, and we will be happy to advise.
When should we plan to arrive and leave? The first day of the holiday is the day you should plan to arrive on - unless otherwise stated, accommodation is provided for that night to make sure everyone is ready first thing in the morning for walking. Walking usually ends the penultimate day, with accommodation provided for that night, and you leave after breakfast on the last day.
What experience do I need? You don't need any map reading skills, or weather forecasting ability. What you do need for any holiday is a reasonable level of fitness, plus the determination to get up the slopes - these are two things your guide can not give you. The harder the holiday, the more walking experience you would need, but sure-footedness from any other sport does just as well. For Winter Skills Courses and scrambling holidays, you should have a reasonable level of experience in the hills in summer, and be reasonably fit.
What will the weather be like? The million dollar question. For walks in the UK, we could expect rain, shine, wind, heat or cold, irrespective if it is November or July. For walks outside the UK, the weather is a little more predictable. By the end of June, most snow has disappeared from the paths we will walk on, getting less as the summer progresses. Unless the forecast predicts otherwise, you can generally expect clear skies in the morning, with cloud building, and a rain/thunderstorm later in the afternoon. Plan for the worst, hope for the best!
What are mountain refuges like? These can vary from corrugated iron shacks to what looks like a normal hotel. Some have hot showers, some don't. Some provide evening meals and breakfast, even packed lunches, some don't - it depends which country you are in, even from refuge to refuge. The main difference is the sleeping arrangements. They can be small double rooms or, more commonly higher in the mountains, rooms with up to 30 people, men and women, sleeping in one room - earplugs are an essential item on treks staying at refuges! You will get detailed information nearer the holiday, but if you are unsure and you want to know more before deciding, then contact us.
How do I get to the start of the holiday and home again? This travel is not included in the holiday, but if you are travelling abroad, we can supply travel information - please request this when you book your holiday. When you receive your day-to-day itinerary, you will receive information on where we meet to start the holiday.
